Day 2. Olympic Training

Achieving perfect gauge on my sport weight yarn with the first swatch was too good to be finished. Just like the athletes, I was back in training last night.

The B&L sport weight (BTW, Marie commented on how appropriate my Olympic Knitting is being done on 'Sport ' weight yarn. Clever isn't she?) needed a bigger than 4mm needle to give EZ's required gauge of 20 stitches. Rather than take it step by step and go to a 4.5, I went right to the top of EZ's list and tried the 5mm. The gauge was perfect for the sweater. 20 stitches exactly. Dead on. Yippee. Done with gauge swatches.

Before bed last night, I pinned it to the blocking board. Top notch athletes knitters - so fussy - always block before accepting gauge count.

This morning I measured.
IF I give it just the tiniest squish, it is 20 stitches. Unsquished, it definitely reads 19.

The computer makes the stitches easy to see, and the mouse easy to count them, so please, count them for me. Is there any way I could, truthfully in any way, say it counts 20?

I think my swatch on 5 mm needles is good enough. After all, who needs a blocked sweater. Unblocked looks great. My coach says "Try again. One more time. You can do it, Brenda."

Slave driver!

Today, my goal is another swatch. 5.5mm needles this time.

'Talk about Clever! That is utterly brilliant - to take a photo of knitted swatches - then you can note on the photo the needle size and yarn and cross reference gauge right at your desk!!!

Never mind how much easier it is to count with the aid of an enlarged photo and the mouse!

Brenda I have to tell you, your posts often cause me to have right out loud "aha" moments and this is definitely one of them!

I love B&L yarns. It behaves well, softens up with washing. I'm using the sport weight for some of my Fair Isle projects that don't require and infinity of shades (if you like, check my Rav project--Roscalie Cardigan--sproutsnknits is my Rav name. I'm surprised at the needle size for such a fine yarn. I'd sure like to make this pattern, but I have made a resolution not to buy new patterns till I've knit more of my existing patterns. I'm glad I found your blog.

Looks like 20 stitches to me. No, really, I counted them.

The fabric looks lovely, too. I'd be interested to see what sort of fabric the larger needle gives. Personally, I'll do some math to use the fabric I prefer. ;) And I hate doing math.

Is the sweater knit in pieces, flat? Or in the round? Does that change your gauge? It does mine, a bit (purling back).

Go Brenda, Go!

I'm confused, if you're getting 19 sts on size 5mm needles shouldn't you go to 4.5mm needles to try for 2o sts?
